When entrepreneurial pair Simon and Amy Hope of Auckland’s COOL FOOD culinary initiative decided it was time to get out of the big smoke, they looked to the New Zealand capital of ‘slow living’ to realise their dream.

They were looking for a kinder pace, but one that also came with a healthy mix of upmarket style, excellent food, award winning wine and an effortless joie de vivre just minutes from the sea. What better place than the uniquely chic town of Matakana, less than an hour from Auckland’s CBD and famous all over the world for it’s superb Saturday market, surrounding vineyard restaurants and beachside recreational opportunities?

Now committed Matakana residents, they began their journey in the region by creating Black and White Barn, an upmarket, rustic property with bed and breakfast accommodation. Winner of Best Accommodation at the 2018 Junction Awards, the unique spot is the perfect central base from which to explore the surrounding coast, whilst dreamy enough to be a sanctuary to dream, sleep and think. Comprising two luxurious suites that can be hired together for four, it has been a happy destination for visitors both local and international.

In late 2018 the Black and White Barn was joined by the two-bedroom White Cottage, a landmark Matakana home just a stone’s throw away from the iconic market. Within easy walking distance of each other, the properties are completely unique and can be hired independently or as a pair, depending on the size of your group.

Come and make our home your home – we think you’ll love Matakana as much as we do.
